We would like to welcome a new provider, Dr. Derek Kunz, Sports Medicine Physician with Saint Alphonsus.
What is a Sports Medicine Physician?
A physician with specialized training who promotes lifelong fitness and wellness, and encourages prevention of illness and injury. Sports Medicine Physicians help patients maximize function and minimize disability and time away from sports, work, or school.
Dr. Kunz will be an integral part of the Saint Alphonsus Sports Medicine team, which also includes surgeons, specialty physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, coaches, and of course, the patient!
What is the difference between a Sports Medicine Physician and an Orthopedic Surgeon?
Both are well trained in musculoskeletal medicine. Sports Medicine Physicians specialize in the non-operative medical treatment of musculoskeletal sports conditions. Approximately 90% of all sports injuries are non-surgical. Sports Medicine Physicians can expedite referrals to an orthopedic surgeon, when indicated, and can help guide referrals to appropriate rehabilitative care, as needed.
Common examples of musculoskeletal problems include:
- Acute injuries (ankle sprains, muscle strains, knee and shoulder injuries, and fractures)
- Overuse injuries (tendonitis, stress fractures)
Sports Medicine Physicians also specialize in:
- Mild traumatic brain injury and other head injuries
- “Return to play” decisions in the sick or injured athlete
- Injury prevention
- Strength training and conditioning
- Nutrition, supplements, and performance issues
- Exercise prescription for patients who want to increase their fitness
