The YMCA Famous Idaho Potato Marathon, presented by the Idaho Potato Commission, is a fun full marathon, half marathon, 10K or 5K course along the Boise, Idaho greenbelt. All courses are flat and fast! This marathon can be used to qualify for the 2014 Boston Marathon. Bring the entire family out for this event! We have a distance that will work for everyone.

Join us at the YMCA Famous Idaho Potato Expo! Pick up your race number and much more. There will be all kinds of exciting activities to check out. The first YMCA Tater Tot Trot for the youngsters and a 1 Mile Family Run, vendors from around the Valley, and a meal to help you fuel up before the big race. Tater Tot Trot: May 17, 2013 at 5:30pm

The Tater Tot Trot starts at 5:30pm with each division starting as soon as the younger division is finished. Parents are welcome to be either side of the course for encouragement.  Each dash will be 25 to 40 yards.  (Division are: 12 months and under and 13 to 24 months) - You can pick up your packet before the race at the Riverside Hotel.

1 Mile Family Run: May 17, 2013 at 6:00pm

This fun is form the whole family. You can all have an easy warm up together before the big race day. - Race Packets will be available before the race at the Riverside Hotel.

Pre-Race Buffet: May 17, 2013 5:30pm-7:30pm

Runners need a nutritious and delicious meal before a big run. The Riverside Hotel will offer a pre race buffet for athletes and their families. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 the day of. Get your tickets now.

Famous Idaho Potato Marathon Training!

Train with us beginning January 5th and get the benefit of preparing with others for the same event! Our group will train for either the Race-to-Robie Creek scheduled on April 20th or the Famous Idaho Potato Marathon scheduled on May 18th. The program will be led by 5-time Race-to-Robie Creek winner and YMCA Youth Sports Coach, Mike Carlson.

Benefits will include:

  • Train with others preparing for the same event, on Saturday mornings
  • Recommended training schedule to guide you
  • Optional weekday evening speed workouts 
  • Attend weekday evening educational seminars from professionals in the field including physical therapists, nutritionists, and area coaches
  • Access to restrooms and fluids on routes
  • Preview race course routes before race day

Course Information and Maps

We will do our best to accommodate any wheelchair or special needs competitors.

Please check back often to see if flooding or construction has changed the course.

Water/Aid Stations: These will be located along the full marathon course every two miles through mile 20, and once every mile thereafter. Half marathon, 10k, and 5k runners will have aid stations at least once every two miles.

The full and half marathons are both certified courses, even though this is not reflected on the maps below. The distances listed on these maps are only approximate.

Team Participants
Get a group together from your office, school, church, family, or just a group of friends! Forming a team is a great way to take a step toward healthy living, and helps to build a network of people to encourage you in your fitness goals. Teams need to consist of 10 or more people. All team members will race under the same team name, but may complete different distances. Team participants can register online.  Just ask all team members to enter your team name and team captain's name online to get the team rate.

Due to the amount of participants racing, we will not make any registration changes after Wednesday 15th.

Packet Pick-up:
All participants must pick up their race numbers on Friday, May 17 from 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at The Riverside Hotel (2900 Chinden Boulevard, Boise, ID 83714. For more information about the new 2013 Packet-Pick up events, click herePackets will also be available Saturday at the starting line.

Policies and Rules

To ensure a smooth run event and a good time for everyone, we ask that you read and adhere to the following race instructions.

Due to confusion caused by numerous people choosing to take the short course last year, we must change our timing policy. If you change distances once the race has started you will receive a DNF, you will not be listed as a finisher at any distance. You may change distances up until May15, 2013, but may not change distances after that date.

Refund Policy:
Cancelations made 8 or more days prior to the race will receive a full refund. Cancelations made within 7 or less days prior to the race will receive a 50% refund minus a $5.00 processing fee. There are no race day refunds and no refunds after the race. If you have any questions, please contact the Race Director at racedirector@ymcatvidaho.org

Transportation and Hotel Information

Parking and "Potato" Shuttle:
Park near the finish line and we'll take you to the start of the race! We will also transport your clothes (clearly marked with your name and race # on your bag) from the start line to the finish area. Parking is limited at the starting lines. Buses will pick-up on the corner of Royal Blvd./Lusk.

Parking is available at the BSU Health Sciences Riverside Building on the NW corner of th 9th and Royal Blvd., and the Towers Parking in the BSU lot on the East side of Capitol Blvd.

Shuttle times:
Marathon & Half Marathon: 5:15am - 6:00am
5K & 10K: 8:00am - 9:30am

No transportation will be available back to the start area by bus so please make arrangements if you need them. The host hotel will pick-up participants staying with them after the race at Royal Blvd/Lusk and BSU Towers after the race from 10:00am-2:00pm. 

Hotel Information:
If you are traveling from far away to participate in the race, stay at our host hotel, The Riverside Hotel. Mention you are participating in the YMCA Famous Idaho Potato race and deluxe guest rooms will start at $99.00 and include a brunch buffet for two. A portion of room proceeds are donated back to the YMCA.
