Treasure Valley Family YMCA

P16 Project

As proud partners in the “Go On” campaign in our state, the Treasure Valley Family Y is excited to collaborate with United Way, The J. A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation and the Caldwell Schools to increase the number of students who go on to post secondary education and/or training in the district.

P-16’s goal is to ensure that all children in the Caldwell School District are academically, socially and emotionally ready to start school. This program also seeks to increase the number of Caldwell children who go on to college or post-secondary training from 23% to 50% over the next four years by providing preschool and afterschool programs in the Caldwell School District.

The key elements of the P-16 Project are:

  • Early Childhood Education
Improve the number of children (ages 3-5) who attend early education classes from 40 to 480, ensuring that all children are ready to succeed when they enter kindergarten.
  • Reading Proficiency
Improve the number of third graders who perform at an advanced level in reading from 30% to 100%
  • Mentoring and Leadership
Give every child an opportunity to participate in after-school programs that will build meaningful mentor relationships, improve health and well-being, offer academic support, and help children develop a vision and goals for a better future.
  • College Aspirations
Develop partnerships with businesses and local colleges so students will have early training, dual-credit and internship opportunities
  • Financial Assistance
Create an expectation with children (and their parents) that they will go on to post-secondary educational programs and provide resources (scholarships, financial aid and college savings accounts) to ensure that this is achievable.

We will open two new full time preschool programs and two new after school program sites for the 2011-2012 school year, allowing us to serve 128 children. We also plan to add an additional ten preschool programs and four school age programs over the next four years to serve another 768 children. We can only do this with great partners, a shared vision and defined goals.

We all know that college will not be enough to enable today’s youth to become happy, healthy and contributing citizens of the future. But our past work shows us that by establishing the right foundation in preschool years, we can make a huge difference for students who otherwise would enter school so far behind they never catch up.

P-16 Partners include Caldwell School District, City of Caldwell, College of Idaho, Lee Pesky Learning Center, United Way of Treasure Valley, J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation and Idaho Business Coalition for Education Excellence.
