Coaching Philosophy

The Y Endurance Sports Coaching Philosophy

To grow the endurance community and meet the needs of our members we have set up an apprentice program with our coaches. This system is set up to train a new generation of protégés, both athletes and coaches, to flourish in an active lifestyle while unlocking the joys of being fit and healthy.

Coaching is the key to releasing the potential of the athlete and capitalizing on it. It has been described as: “convincing the willing to accept the unwanted and to achieve the unattainable and the unknown” The coach does not always need to impart knowledge, advice, or even wisdom. What he or she must do is speak and act, in such a way that others learn and perform at their best. They convert involvement into commitment.

Coaching is all about helping others to identify and define their specific goals, and then organize themselves to attain these goals. It is managing all facets of the program, both creative and scientific. Coaching deals with building an individual’s personal skills: setting the goals, communication, management style, decision making and problem solving. It is based on the concept that individuals learn most from the everyday application of skills and by trying things out in practice. Coaches draw upon an athlete’s own inner knowledge, resources and creativity to help them be more effective.
