Why integrate mindful breathing in the classroom? Research shows that mindful breathing can calm the nervous system, which affects our heart rate, digestion, and stress response. It can also alleviate stress-induced anxiety and depression, as well as increase attention and self-awareness. If students experience reduced stress, a greater capacity to focus their attention, and greater self-awareness, they are not only more receptive to learning, but they have a better opportunity to self-regulate and make appropriate choices in the classroom. As a result, instructional time is more effective and students can develop not just the knowledge, but the life-long skills to become conscious and curious learners.
